How Did Shakespeare Become Such a Great Writer?

Over 400 years after his death in 1616, Shakespeare’s name still rings a bell when it comes to literature. There are plenty of reasons why William Shakespeare remains one of the most read authors today, but what made him a great writer was simply because he wrote something for everyone.

He wrote tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet so his audience could cry, and penned comedies such as The Taming of the Shrew so his audience could laugh. He compiled poems and sonnets to express beauty, love, and time. Simply put, Shakespeare offered variety to people during his time without realizing they were seeking it.

These works can be credited to his creative imagination and his genuine fascination for the world despite not leaving England throughout his career. The humanity embedded in his works is one of the reasons why it is still celebrated and referenced in books, films, plays, and other forms of media to this day.

Time.com notes that HBO’s 2016 hit series Westworld is peppered with literary references, with Shakespeare being cherry-picked above all.

Shakespeare’s mastery of the English language is part and parcel of what made him a great writer. He obviously wrote at great volume, and when he could not find the right fit, he took the liberty of coining words to make it work. The playwright is responsible for over 1,700 common words in the English language (Mabillard).

Shakespeare’s significance may never fade away, and we are all partly responsible for it. For as long as we pass down his works from one generation to another and continue to study the Shakespearean way of things, the Bard of Avon’s craft will continue to flow through time.
